Termites. Just hearing the word can strike fear in the hearts of homeowners and prospective property buyers alike. These tiny, wood-destroying insects can cause considerable damage if not detected and dealt with swiftly. At Site Inspections, we understand the need for prompt action, which is why we’re sharing some tell-tale signs of a termite infestation.
Swarmers or Discarded Wings
Swarmers are young female and male termites that leave the nest to establish a new colony. If you spot flying termites, or worse, discarded wings, it’s a potential sign of an infestation. Termites often discard their wings after finding a new place to set up a colony.
Mud Tubes
Termites construct mud tubes as a protective tunnel system that provides them with a safe, humid environment to travel between their nest and food source. These tubes, often found along the property’s foundation or in crawl spaces, are a sure sign of termite activity.
Damaged or Hollowed Wood
Termites prefer to stay hidden, which means they rarely feed on the surface of wood. Instead, they carve out galleries within, leaving the surface looking relatively normal. However, over time, the wood may sound hollow when tapped, or you might notice a honeycomb interior if the wood is broken.
Frass (Termite Droppings)
Drywood termites leave behind wood-coloured droppings called frass as they consume wood. If you notice a small pile of what looks like sawdust, it might be a sign of a termite infestation.
Blistering Paint or Discoloured Walls
Often mistaken for water damage, the blistering of paint or discolouration of walls can indicate termites. These signs occur when termites are feeding and nesting within the walls, creating moisture that can damage or discolour the paint.
If you notice any of these signs, don’t delay. According to the Australian Standards AS3660-2000 for Termite Management, swift action is critical to prevent further damage. A professional inspection can confirm whether you have an infestation, assess the extent of the damage, and recommend a course of action.
